Jürgen Groebler

Jürgen Gröbler (born July 31, 1946 in Magdeburg ) is a former German rowing trainer.

Life

Groebler completed his studies at the German University of Physical Culture (DHfK) in Leipzig in 1970 with his diploma thesis on the subject of "Biomechanical technology analysis in canoe racing. Evaluation of test examinations ”.

He trained first East German and later British Olympic rowers. During his coaching time in the GDR , his athletes achieved numerous medals from 1972 to 1988, starting with the bronze medal from Wolfgang Güldenpfennig in 1972 in Munich. After that, one of his protégés won gold at all Olympic Games - with the exception of the Boycott Games Los Angeles in 1984 . Groebler later admitted that he had actively encouraged his athletes to doping in the GDR. His excuse was that he was born in the wrong place and that it was not possible to run away.

After becoming unemployed after the fall of the Wall, he moved to Great Britain in 1991, where he trained Steven Redgrave and Matthew Pinsent . They achieved Olympic gold in 1992 and 1996 in two. Four years later, James Cracknell , Tim Foster , Redgrave and Pinsent achieved gold in the foursome, and in 2004 the gold medal in the foursome was won by Steve Williams , Cracknell, Ed Coode and Pinsent. In 2008, 2012 and 2016, the four-mans he trained without the British each won the Olympic gold medal. At World Rowing Championships between 1993 and 2014, his teams won a total of 14 gold and three silver medals. In 2000, Groebler won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Coach Award . In 2017 he was honored for his life's work at the “BT Sports Industry Awards”. In 2018, the former top rower Hugh Matheson and rowing journalist Christopher Dodd published the biographical book "More Power: The Story of Jurgen Grobler: The most successful Olympic coach of all time".

Because of the umlauts in his name, which are not known to the British, he is usually listed as Jurgen Grobler or Juergen Grobler in Great Britain .
