Jürgen Himmelbauer

Jürgen Himmelbauer (born November 20, 1958 in Linz ; † January 13, 2013 ) was an Austrian politician of the Greens and from 2003 to 2009 the first Green City Councilor in Linz. He was a founding member of the Green Linz and state spokesman for the Greens Upper Austria as well as a member of the extended federal board.

education and profession

Himmelbauer was born in 1958 as the son of a Voest worker. He attended elementary, secondary and vocational school in Linz and completed an apprenticeship as a wholesale merchant between 1973 and 1976. He then worked in a bookstore and was an employee of the Upper Austrian regional health insurance fund. In 1979 he became secretary of the district youth in the Austrian Federation of Trade Unions , in 1984 he switched again as an employee to the Upper Austrian regional health insurance fund. He went through state training as a community worker and passed the special service examination at the main association of Austrian social insurance institutions. In 2002 he left the regional health insurance fund and in 2003 took over the position of managing director at the Institute for Health Planning.

Himmelbauer began his political career as a district youth chairman and with the Austrian Federation of Trade Unions. He was initially a member of the district committee of the SPÖ Linz and was an activist of the anti-nuclear movement. He was also involved as a founding member of the Upper Austrian peace movement. He finally found his political home with the Upper Austrian Greens and was a founding member of the GRÜNEN Linz. On January 22, 1987, he moved into the Linz municipal council as a local councilor and was chairman of the Greens in the Linz council. On November 6, 2003, he took over the role of City Councilor for Mobility, making him the first Green City Councilor in Linz. He was also district spokesman for the Linz Greens until 2009 and from 1992 to 1994 regional spokesman for the Greens in Upper Austria. Furthermore, he was active within the party as a member of the extended federal executive committee. Himmelbauer left politics in 2009. In 2013 he died as a result of a long-term illness.

During his political career he also held various functions in the city of Linz. He was a member of the administrative committee of the Linz Children's and Youth Services and the Museums of the City of Linz, and was a member of the supervisory board of the General Hospital of the City of Linz GmbH and Immobilien Linz GmbH. He was also a member of the supervisory board of Linz AG , Linzer Lokalbahn AG and chairman of the mobility committee.

Private

Himmelbauer was the father of a daughter.
