Jürgen Runge (President)

Jürgen Runge (* 1930 in Heidelberg ) is a German chemist and former President of the Synod of the Evangelical Church of the Church Province of Saxony .

Life

Runge studied chemistry in Halle from 1949 to 1955 and received his doctorate in 1961 at the University of Leipzig . The habilitation followed in 1976 at the TU Dresden . After receiving his doctorate, Runge worked in the research and development department of the Buna-Werke until 1993 , where he could only be promoted to head of research group or department because he refused to join the SED .

In 1951 Runge joined the Evangelical Student Congregation (ESG) in Halle, and in 1953 he headed the ESG as a student trust student . From 1969 to 1979 he was a member of the Synod of the Federation of Ev. Churches in the GDR and from 1980 to 2008 member of the Synod of Ev. Church of the ecclesiastical province of Saxony. From 1994 to 2004 he was a member of the church leadership as president. In 2004, Petra Gunst succeeded him as the first woman to lead the Provincial Synod.

The Ministry of State Security monitored Runge in an operational process with the code name "Shadow".
