Jürgen Schmidt (lawyer)

Jürgen Schmidt (* 1941 in Saarbrücken ) is a German legal scholar. Between 1998 and 2006 he was rector of the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster .

Schmidt studied law from 1961 to 1965 , he passed his first state examination in law in 1965 and his second in 1969. He received his doctorate in 1968 . His habilitation , with which he also acquired his venia legendi in 1972 , came from the field of civil law, international private law, legal theory and legal sociology . Between 1972 and 1975 he taught at the Faculty of Law and Economics at Saarland University , and from 1975 onwards at the chair for legal theory and civil law in Münster.

In 1994 Schmidt was promoted to the rector's office of the Westphalian Wilhelms-Universität, until 1998 he was vice-rector for structure, planning and building matters and chairman of the commission for structure, planning and building matters. In 1998 Schmidt took over the office of Rector of the University from Gustav Dieckheuer . In 2002 he was elected to his second term, which ended on September 30, 2006. His successor was Ursula Nelles .
