Ursula Nelles (born November 25, 1949 in Münster ) is a German legal scholar and was Rector of the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster from 2006 to 2016 .

Life

Ursula Nelles studied law at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität from 1968 until her first state examination in 1973. In 1976 she passed the second state examination and in 1980 - also at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität - became a Dr. jur. PhD . Ten years later, in 1990, he again completed his habilitation there .

Between 1990 and 1991, after her admission as a lawyer , she received teaching assignments in Münster and Hamburg as well as a visiting professorship at the Catholic University of Nijmegen in the Netherlands . This was followed by a professorship for criminal law and criminal procedure law at the University of Bremen and a teaching position at the University of Greifswald in 1992 and at the University of Düsseldorf in 1993/94 . In 1994 she returned to the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität in Münster, where she received a professorship for criminal law, criminal procedural law and commercial criminal law and at the same time became director of the Institute for Criminal Sciences. In 2004 she was elected Dean of the Law Faculty of the Westphalian Wilhelms University. She held this office until the beginning of the 2006 summer semester. From October 2006 to September 30, 2016 Ursula Nelles was Rector of the Westphalian Wilhelms University. Her predecessor as rector is Jürgen Schmidt , her successor Johannes Wessels .

Nelles came under criticism from the university's student body because of her successful efforts to introduce tuition fees. She is accused of contradicting her own earlier statements on this issue on the one hand and acting contrary to the position of her party, the SPD , on the other .

Ursula Nelles is a member of the German Association of Women Lawyers , of which she was chair from 1997 to 2001.
