Karl Wilhelm Osterwald (born February 23, 1820 in Bretsch , † March 25, 1887 in Mühlhausen ) was a pedagogue , writer , Protestant hymn poet and nature lover.

Life

Osterwald received his education at the high school in Salzwedel and at the Francke Foundations in Halle an der Saale . He studied philology at the University of Halle and then worked as a teacher at the Royal Pedagogy in Halle and at the Domgymnasium in Merseburg . From 1865 he was director at the grammar school in Mühlhausen.

During his time in Mühlhausen he published several educational writings and poems. About 70 of his nature, hiking and love poems were set to music by Robert Franz . His former student, the biologist Richard von Hertwig , erected a monument in his honor in the Mühlhausen forest in 1889 .

Together with the cathedral organist David Hermann Engel (1816–1877) in Merseburg, he edited the sacred songs of Johann Wolfgang Franck , which he had provided with new texts. In addition, he also wrote his own hymns. In the Protestant church hymn books of the early 20th century there are hymns from Osterwald, u. a. the Advent song O you my consolation and sweet hope and the Christmas song Heilge Nacht, I greet you .

Osterwald was awarded the eagle to the Royal House Order of Hohenzollern . He belonged to the Federation of Freemasons .
