David Hermann Engel

David Hermann Engel (born January 22, 1816 in Neuruppin , † May 3, 1877 in Merseburg ) was a German organist and composer .

Life

After his first organ lessons with Friedrich Wilke in Neu-Ruppin, Engel studied with Friedrich Schneider in Dessau and Adolph Hesse in Breslau . In 1841 he went to Berlin , where he worked as a music and singing teacher. Some of his works have appeared in print here. The acquaintance with Gustav Wilhelm Teschner led him to occupy himself with the older Italian church music. With his chorale book published in 1844 he gained high recognition and as a result received repeated commissions for the Royal Cathedral Choir . In 1848 Engel was elected organist at Merseburg Cathedral .

Engel is considered to be the “discoverer” and sponsor of the organ builder Friedrich Ladegast .

Award

  • Engel received the gold medal for art and science from the Prussian king for the publication of the chorale book for the worship service for church and house.
