J. Duncan M. Derrett

J. Duncan M. Derrett (full name John Duncan Martin Derrett , born August 30, 1922 in London , † October 21, 2012 in Blockley , Cotswold ) was a British legal scholar and orientalist .

Life

After serving in the war in India (1942-1945) Derrett studied Indian history and religion at Jesus College (Oxford) and at the School of Oriental and African Studies and graduated with a doctorate . From 1965 until his retirement in 1982 he was Professor of Oriental Law at University College London .

Derrett was particularly concerned with Indian legal thought, with Christian and Buddhist teaching and their similarities. He wrote numerous monographs and essays, some of which were translated into several languages.
