J. Homer Dimon

Joseph Homer Dimon (born August 8, 1869 in Muscogee County , Georgia - † January 10, 1951 in Columbus , Georgia) was an American businessman and politician .

Life

Joseph Homer Dimon was the eldest child of Samuel and Sarah Dimon and grew up with his siblings on their father's farm in Muscogee County, Georgia. He went to school in Wynnton, a suburb of Columbus and only a few miles from home. He later attended Eastman Business College in Poughkeepsie , New York with one of his brothers . After returning to Georgia, he settled in Columbus and opened a clothing store. After making a fortune, he founded the National Showcase Company , a furniture manufacturer and distributor, and served as its president. He invested the money generated from this, among other things, in the construction of the Dimon Court Apartments building in the early 1920s .

From 1922 to 1931 he was mayor of Columbus. Dimon was the first mayor of the city after it had switched its administration in January 1922 to the form City commission government . In 1935 he again held the office of mayor.

Opened in 1968 and located in Muscogee County, Dimon Elementary School was named after him.

Dimon was married to Martha Clayton Estes (1871-1939) since 1894. Several children were born from the marriage. Most recently he lived in the Dimon Court Apartments . He died there on January 10, 1951 at the age of 81, suffering from heart problems for a long time.
