JM Troska (born August 3, 1881 in Valašské Klobouky ; † September 3, 1961 in Prague ) was a Czech writer who devoted himself in particular to sci-fi novels for young people. Born as Jan Matzal , he wrote under the pseudonym JM Troska and partly also Jan Merfort , in 1947 he had his name changed to Jan Troska .

Life

Troska studied at the Business School in Brno and then worked in several machine and steel works, including in Pilsen and Mladá Boleslav. Because he was covering various acts of sabotage by the workers, he was sent to the front in Italy in 1917. 1921–1926 he lived in Yugoslavia and worked in a machine factory. After his return to Czechoslovakia he worked in Hradec Králové in the Ježek company for the production of electrical systems. Troska, who suffered from Menière's disease , retired at the age of 49.

Troska wrote several sci-fi novels in the 1930s and 1940s. Although he was unfamiliar with American literature, he incorporated many of his own ideas, for example he used the concept of an interstellar federation two years before Isaac Asimov in his Foundation cycle . He was also inspired by the novels of Jules Verne . Having even worked in technical professions, he often pushed the laws of physics aside.
