The Journal of Physical Chemistry A , abbreviated J. Phys. Chem. A , is one of the weekly publications of the American Chemical Society . The first edition of this journal appeared in October 1896 under the title The Journal of Physical Chemistry (abbreviated J. Phys. Chem. ). From 1947 to 1950 the name was expanded to "Journal of Physical Chemistry and Colloid Chemistry", after which it was reverted to the original name. In 1997 there was a split into The Journal of Physical Chemistry A and The Journal of Physical Chemistry B , and The Journal of Physical Chemistry C followed in 2007 .

The published articles covered the entire field of physical chemistry until the journals were split up , and since then The Journal of Physical Chemistry A has dealt with the topics of molecular theoretical and experimental physical chemistry, The Journal of Physical Chemistry B Solids, Soft Matter and Liquids and The Journal of Physical Chemistry C Nanotechnology, Surfaces, Catalysis and Electron Transport.

The impact factor in 2014 was 2.693. According to the statistics of the ISI Web of Knowledge , the journal with this impact factor ranks 52nd out of 139 journals in the physical chemistry category and tenth out of 34 journals in the nuclear physics and molecular and chemical physics category.

The editor-in-chief is George C. Schatz of Northwestern University in Evanston , Illinois .
