history

In 1910 Johannes Schmalz founded the "Johannes Schmalz Razor Blade Factory" in Glatten. The “Glattis” brand was known throughout Germany and was extremely successful with up to 600,000 razor blades sold per month. The spread of the electric razor required a reorientation. From 1948 onwards, Artur Schmalz led the company to further successes with innovative developments in lightweight vehicle construction. Luggage trailers and mobile stairs for airports were developed by Schmalz, as well as transport equipment for furniture factories. When Kurt Schmalz took over management in 1984, the company realigned and specialized in vacuum technology . In 1990 Wolfgang Schmalz joined the management of the company. Together, the brothers developed the traditional company into the world's leading supplier of vacuum technology. At the end of 2017, Wolfgang Schmalz moved from the management of J. Schmalz GmbH as chairman to the company's advisory board.

In 1998 the first branch was opened in Switzerland. Today the company maintains a sales network with 19 locations worldwide. In 2009 the company's production area was expanded by 10,170 m². Two further construction projects were started in 2013: an office building that offers space for 120 office workplaces and various research and test areas, as well as a reception building with spacious areas for customers and guests as well as a modern company restaurant for employees. The groundbreaking ceremony for a new office building took place in July 2017 and the groundbreaking ceremony for the “Schmalz Wertstromfabrik”, an expansion of the production and logistics area by 11,500 square meters, took place in December.
