The WildFly Application Server is an application server based on the Java EE standard and part of the JBoss Middleware framework. Wildfly is written in the Java programming language and is platform-independent . WildFly is the basis of the commercial version of the IBM Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform (EAP).
history
Work on the software began in 2000 and reached an important milestone in July 2004 with certification according to the Compatibility Test Suite for the J2EE 1.4 from Sun. WildFly was thus the first certified open source application server. In 2006 the Linux distributor Red Hat took over JBoss Inc. for a sum of 420 million US dollars .
Prior to version 8, known as JavaBeans Open Source Software Application Server , or JBoss Application Server for short, or JBoss AS , or simply JBoss
With version 8.0, WildFly was officially certified for the Java EE 7 (full and web profile) released in 2013 . Hibernate is used as the Java Persistence API implementation .
In June 2016 RedHat provided a for Micro Service - Deployments before optimized version wildfly Swarm. This was renamed Thorntail in June 2018. In addition to JavaEE, Thorntail also supports the Eclipse MicroProfile .
From version 19 (March 2020) WildFly supports JakartaEE as well as the Eclipse MicroProfile itself.

Business model
WildFly is free software under the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL) and can be downloaded free of charge from the manufacturer's website, including the source code . Product development is mainly financed by an optional support subscription, the so-called JBoss Subscription , which consists of support services as well as productivity- increasing tools for administration, monitoring and patch management. In larger environments, this should enable time savings in development, increased productivity and availability.
Red Hat has commercialized support for a WildFly-derived version of the JBoss Enterprise Application Platform (JBoss EAP). The current version 7.3 was published in March 2020 and is based on Wildfly 18.
use cases
The WildFly Application Server offers individual services that are freely configurable. Each of these services is packaged in its own Java archive , the so-called service archive .
