Business Japanese Proficiency Test
The Business Japanese Proficiency Test (BJT, Japanese BJT ビ ジ ネ ス 日本語 能力 テ ス ト , BJT bijinesu nihongo nōryoku tesuto ) is an internationally held language test that tests and assesses knowledge of Japanese communication in business situations. This is in contrast to the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT), which tests general Japanese.
It is aimed at non-native speakers, especially students and business people, i.e. people who want to study or work in Japan .
history
The test has been organized by the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) since 1996 with the support of leading Japanese government and economic organizations, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Trade, Economy and Industry. In Germany, the Japonicum of the State Language Institute of North Rhine-Westphalia in Bochum has carried out the JETRO test since 1996 ; it took place once a year in November. The last test in Bochum was carried out in 2008.
The test has been carried out by the Japan Kanji Aptitude Testing Foundation ( 日本 漢字 能力 検 定 協会 ) since April 2009 . This organization also carries out the Kanji Kentei . On August 18, 2010, the test appeared to be aborted first, but was then restarted.
exam
In Japan, the test will be held in seven test centers in Tokyo , Yokohama , Nagoya , Kyoto , Osaka , Fukuoka and Ōita . Outside of Japan there are test centers in China , Hong Kong , Thailand (Bangkok), USA (Hawaii) and Taiwan (Taipei). It is currently not possible to take the exam in Germany.
The test is held in June and November each year. The exam fee is 7,000 yen.
In contrast to the JLPT, there is only one test level at which a maximum of 800 points can be awarded. Based on the points, grades are then awarded, with J1 + being the highest and J5 the lowest. The grading scale is as follows:
Level | Points | description |
---|---|---|
J1 + | 600-800 | Can communicate adequately in Japanese in any professional situation. |
J1 | 530-599 | Can communicate in Japanese appropriately in most professional situations. |
J2 | 420-529 | Can communicate in Japanese appropriately in a limited range of professional situations. |
J3 | 320-419 | Can communicate in Japanese to some extent in a limited range of professional situations. |
J4 | 200-319 | Achieve a minimum level of communication in Japanese in a limited range of professional situations. |
J5 | 0-199 | Has practically no Japanese communication skills in professional situations. |
The test lasts 120 minutes and is divided into three parts: listening comprehension (35 questions, 50 minutes), listening comprehension and reading comprehension (30 questions, 30 minutes), and reading comprehension (35 questions, 40 minutes).
