Japan Satellite TV (JSTV for short) is an international TV broadcaster from Japan, which, similar to Deutsche Welle TV and TV5 Monde, addresses an international audience. JSTV contains news and cultural programs as well as Japanese films and broadcasts and can be received in encrypted form via satellite. Many hotels and public institutions feed in the station free of charge; an additional subscription is available for reception in cable networks for around 50 euros per month.

JSTV started in Europe in March 1990 in analogue and unencrypted form on the Astra 1A satellite. Here JSTV broadcast timeshare with the pan-European entertainment broadcaster Lifestyle and the British The Children's Channel . The shared transponder was used by JSTV daily from 9:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. CET.

From May 3, 1991, JSTV switched to the Astra 1B satellite and significantly extended its transmission time. The broadcast was now daily from 8:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., but most of the program was broadcast encrypted in video crypt . A large part of the programs were taken directly from the Japanese broadcaster NHK . During the free time, the Astra 1B transponder initially broadcast The Children's Channel , from 1994 CMT Country Music Television , from 1997 the BSkyB channels Sky Soap , The History Channel UK and The SciFi Channel UK . In 2001, the analog broadcast of JSTV was ended in this way.

Today (as of 2015) JSTV broadcasts its program digitally via Eutelsat Hot Bird 13D . The program is encrypted with the Conax system. In addition to broadcasting via satellite, the JSTV-i Internet service provides additional access to the JSTV program.
