Ja'ir Shamir

Ja'ir Shamir ( Hebrew יאיר שמיר; * March 18, 1945 in Ramat Gan ) is an Israeli politician. From March 18, 2013 to May 14, 2015, he was Israel's Minister of Agriculture .

family

He was born the son of Yitzchak Shamir . It was named after Avraham "Ja'ir" Stern , the founder of the Lechi group . Shamir grew up in Tel Aviv . When he was one year old, his father Yitzchak was arrested by the British and sent to Eritrea . When Shamir was two years old, his mother was arrested for being a Lechi member. He lives today in Savjon ( Hebrew סַבְיוֹן), a place between Petach Tikwa , Kirjat Ono and Yehud . He is married to Ella. The couple have three children and seven grandchildren.

In an interview he gave to The Jewish Press in 2004, Shamir said that he did not think it was possible to return the land to the Arabs, but that he thought a compromise was possible if it was absolutely necessary. He also said that the then American President George W. Bush was better for Israel than the then Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon . As a result, he also criticized Benjamin Netanyahu for giving in to pressure from others too easily. Shamir therefore meant that Israel should do what it thinks right, regardless of the reservations of others. Shamir also opposed Elhanan Tanenboym's prisoner exchange with Hezbollah . As a Member of Parliament for Jisra'el Beitenu , he was Israel's Minister of Agriculture from March 18, 2013 to May 14, 2015 .
