Jaan Koha

Jaan Koha (born December 17, 1929 in Tartu , †  November 15, 1993 in Tallinn ) was an Estonian composer.

Life

Jaan Koha got his first music lessons from his father. From 1942 to 1949 he studied piano at the Tartu Music School and from 1949 to 1954 composition with Mart Saar and Heino Eller at the Tallinn State Conservatory (now the Estonian Music and Theater Academy ).

From 1950 to 1954 and from 1958 to 1964 Jaan Koha worked as a sound director at Eesti Raadio and from 1954 to 1958 as a music teacher in Tartu. From 1966 to 1983 he was secretary of the Composers' Union of the Estonian SSR ( Estonian ENSV Heliloojate Liit ).

From 1979 he was also a lecturer in music theory at the Pedagogical University of Tallinn , from 1990 with the rank of professor. He has been awarded numerous Estonian artist awards.

Jaan Koha has also become known as a composer since 1953. His most famous works include the ballet Kaubamaja (1962), the cantatas Laul Parteist , Laul Leninist and Laul Kodumaast for mixed choir and orchestra (1960–1969). He also wrote three symphonies (1960, 1968 and 1982), two piano concertos (1958 and 1973) and numerous children's songs, film compositions and stage music.
