John William "Jack" Ackroyd (* 2nd quarter 1895 in Rotherham ; † unknown) was an English football player .

Career

Ackroyd played for Norland FC as a left winger in the Halifax & District League before moving to Halifax Town in the Midland Counties League in April 1915 . At Halifax he came to a total of three league appearances as a left wing runner, before the game was stopped because of the First World War at the end of the 1915/16 season. After the end of the fighting, Ackroyd belonged to the football club of Silverwood Colliery near Rotherham ; with the resumption of regular play for the 1919/20 season , Ackroyd Rotherham County joined, which were newly included in the Football League Second Division . At Rotherham, Ackroyd came only one appearance in the first team during the season, the away game in the later promoted Huddersfield Town on December 25, 1919 was lost 7-1.

Mostly active in the reserve team in the Midland League, Ackroyd, who still belonged to the army, joined the local league rivals Scunthorpe & Lindsey United in 1920 . Herbert Lloyd , with whom he had previously played at Rotherham, was in charge of the change . At Scunthorpe, Ackroyd, who became a crowd favorite due to his willingness to work, was mostly called up in the defense and formed the defender couple with Charlie Betts . Equipped with a good shot, Ackroyd was also responsible as a penalty taker and occasionally helped out in the center forward position. A miss from the penalty spot he afforded himself in the third qualifying round of the FA Cup at Gainsborough Trinity , when he kicked the ground in his shot against goalkeeper Walter Scott and the ball barely rolled to the goal line, where he was picked up by Scott; the home team ultimately won the game 2-0.

For the 1922/23 season , Ackroyd returned to the Football League, Exeter City manager Arthur Chadwick brought the defender to the Third Division South . There Ackroyd came in the course of the season to 30 league and three FA Cup appearances (out in the 5th qualifying round against Bath City ), but at the end of the season he lost his place to Andy Flynn and left the club after one season. His career was continued in the Third Division North at Grimsby Town in the 1923/24 season . Ackroyd formed the defender pair with George Affleck on the first six matchdays before he was ousted by new signing Harry Arch and then only appeared for the reserve team in the Midland League until the end of the season.
