In May 1938 the half-forward moved to Brighton & Hove Albion in the Third Division South for £ 250 . There, too, he was unable to play in the regular team in the 1938/39 season, despite a brace in his third game against Notts County . With the outbreak of the Second World War, his footballing career ended abruptly. During the war he did not appear in football. Atherton was still registered with Brighton & Hove Albion until May 1947, before he was put on the transfer list, but there was no interested party.
