Jack Bedient and the Chessmen were an American rock band from Nevada in the 1960s .
history
The guitarist and vocalist Jack Bedient from Mason City , Washington had already made experiences in the music business in 1961 with the pop ballad "The Mystic One" on Era Records . Since 1964 his group has been called "Jack Bedient and the Chessmen", which is based in Carson City , Nevada and has provided the surrounding region with live gigs that included covers of current pop hits, lounge music and comedic shows. Kevin Woods on lead guitar, Bill Britt on six-string bass, and Jewell Hendricks on drums were the longest running Chessmen.
Her recorded and published work comprised about a dozen singles and six LPs between 1964 and 1969, on which rock numbers can be found again and again between the pop and lounge material. On the second single for Fantasy Records, Double Whammy , the Chessmen used the riff of Dorsey Burnette's rockabilly standard Bertha Lou as a guitar intro , with which they hit the regional radio charts in Reno , Nevada.
Enhanced with the sound of organist Walter Hanna, a live LP for fantasy was recorded. A short stop at Palomar Records resulted in a single with Drummer Boy (Play Us a Song) and Dream Boy (Count Your Dreams) . Only one single, called Glimmer Sunshine , was released on Rev Records before the band was signed to Columbia Records . After a few more releases at Executive Productions and line-up changes, the band was able to stay afloat with live performances until 1972 and then broke up. The band leader Jack Bedient died in 1998.
