Jack Browne, Baron Craigton

Jack Nixon Browne, Baron Craigton CBE , PC (born September 3, 1904 in Rugby , Warwickshire , † July 28, 1993 ) was a Scottish Conservative politician of the Unionist Party .

He was the son of Edwin Gilbert Izod and took the surname Browne in 1920 when his family believed the unusual surname was a disadvantage. He went to Cheltenham College and served as an Acting Group Captain in the Royal Air Force's Balloon Command during World War II . For this he received the CBE medal in 1944 .

Political career

He ran for the seat in the working class constituency of Glasgow Govan in 1945 to no avail , but he was elected to the House of Commons in 1950 and held that seat until 1955. He was then elected to the Glasgow Craigton constituency in 1955 and held that seat until September 1959 , at a time when he was called to the House of Lords .

He was Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Secretary of State for Scotland from 1952 to April 1955 when he became Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Scotland . In November 1959 he became a Life Peer as Baron Craigton , of Renfield in the County of the City of Glasgow . In 1961 he became a Privy Counselor . In October 1959 he became Minister of State for Scotland , and held that post until October 1964.

He later held several key business roles including Chairman of United Biscuits Holdings and aided several conservation groups including the World Wildlife Fund .
