Jacob Frey [ fraɪ ] (born July 23, 1981 in Oakton , Fairfax County , Virginia ) is an American politician with the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL). He has served as Mayor of Minneapolis , Minnesota since January 2, 2018 .

Life

Jacob Frey, whose family is of Russian Jewish descent, grew up in Oakton, a suburb of Washington, DC . He studied law at the College of William & Mary and Villanova University , where he obtained his Juris Doctor degree in 2009 . Frey then moved to Minneapolis and worked at the Faegre Baker Daniels law firm .

Before his political career, Frey was active as a competitive athlete in long-distance running . In 2007 he represented his country at the Pan American Games , in which he was fourth in the marathon competition with his personal best of 2:16:44 hours. In the following year he finished his last competitive race, the New York City Marathon 2008 , in 15th place.

2013 Jacob Frey was in the city council elected by Minneapolis. There he campaigned primarily for labor and environmental policy , but also for affordable housing. In 2016, under Frey, an ordinance was passed that requires polluters to pay fees equal to their pollution, which in turn is used to support environmentally friendly business improvements. Since then, emissions within the city have fallen sharply, and in 2018 Minneapolis was recognized for this success at the US Mayors' Conference. Frey was also involved in drafting a minimum wage ordinance in 2017.

On January 3, 2017, Jacob Frey announced his candidacy for the upcoming mayoral election in Minneapolis. In the election on November 7, 2017, after five steps in the instant runoff voting , he prevailed against his competitor Raymond Dehn with 57.2 percent of the votes. Jacob Frey was sworn in in his new office on January 2, 2018. At his inauguration, Jacob Frey was the second youngest mayor of Minneapolis after Al Hofstede, aged 36 . Frey replaces Betsy Hodges , who was eliminated in the last round.

Frey has been married to lobbyist Sarah Clark since 2016 and lives in Minneapolis.
