Jacob Griebe (born June 22, 1541 in Leipzig ; † July 24, 1601 there ) was the Electoral Saxon Assessor at the Schöffenstuhl and Mayor of Leipzig.

Life

Jacob Griebe's father of the same name (born April 25, 1511 in Berlin; † August 18, 1566 in Leipzig) came from Berlin and settled in Leipzig in 1559 as a merchant. His mother Margaretha Dorien came from Forchheim. Due to the financial strength of his family, he was sent to Nuremberg at a young age, where he was supposed to learn the trade. After his father's death, he took over his business in Leipzig, which was also carried out in Berlin and Nuremberg. So in a short time he got into a big business enterprise of his time. In 1566, Griebe acquired citizenship in Leipzig, joined the Leipzig council in 1571 and held various offices there in the courtroom and country room. In 1591 he advanced to the position of master builder, when in 1597 he redesigned the school building of the old Nikolaischule together with the diaconate apartment there.

In the plague year of 1598 he became mayor of Leipzig for the first time and directed the fortunes of the city again in 1601. However, his second term of office did not last long, since he died that year. His body was buried on July 26, 1601 in Leipzig. Griebe, who also used his legacy to support the trainees at the Thomas School , is best known for commissioned paintings that he had made in 1579. They depict portraits of Martin Luther , Philipp Melanchthon , Johannes Bugenhagen and his wife Walpurga Bugenhagen and are now in the City History Museum in Leipzig. The picture of Walpurga is strongly reminiscent of a copy from the Wittenberg epitaph of Johannes Bugenhagen "The Baptism of Christ", which is located in the Wittenberg town church.

On May 9, 1568, Griebe had married Katharina (* around 1552/1559; † May 17, 1599 in Freiberg), the daughter of Georg Cracow and Sara Bugenhagen. The marriage had eight children. The sons Georg Griebe (* December 24, 1574 in Leipzig; † October 9, 1627 in Freiberg), the later Leipzig councilor Jacob Griebe (* June 7, 1580 in Leipzig; † November 25, 1620 ibid.), Carolus Griebe and the Daughter Sara Griebe (* 1585) survived the father. His granddaughter Catharina Elisabeth Griebe (born December 15, 1616 in Leipzig; † August 26, 1684 ibid.), From the marriage of the younger Jacob Griebe with his second wife Elisabeth Holzmüller, married the Leipzig builder Jacob Mayer on January 29, 1634 .
