Jacob Kohnstamm (born November 14, 1949 in Wassenaar ) is a Dutch politician . He belongs to the left-liberal party Democrats 66 (D66). Since April 2018, Kohnstamm has headed the data protection authority for the Channel Island Jersey. From 2004 to 2014 he was the head of the College Bescherming Persoonsgegevens , the data protection authority of the Netherlands.

After studying law at the University of Amsterdam , Kohnstamm worked as a lawyer between 1977 and 1981 and between 1982 and 1986 . In 1981 he was elected a member of the House of Representatives and was spokesman for the D66 in the areas of defense, police and justice. From 1982 to 1986 he was party chairman. Between 1986 and 1994, Kohnstamm was again a member of the House of Representatives. During his first term in office, he was the spokesman for Internal Affairs, Police and the Middle East . During the 1989-1994 parliamentary term, he was spokesperson for health, police and the Middle East.

Even before his appointment as chairman of the Dutch data protection authority, Kohnstamm held a number of public offices, including chairing the police information and communication technology board . From 1994 to 1998 he was State Secretary for Internal Affairs.

Kohnstamm is the head of the Dutch data protection authority and represents the country in the Article 29 data protection group , which he chaired from 2010 to 2014.
