Jacob Pavlovich Adler , actually Jankew Pawlowitsch Adler , (born 1855 in Odessa ; died 1926 in New York ) was a Yiddish actor and theater director in Odessa, London and New York.

Life

He grew up in Odessa. There he celebrated his first successes as an actor in the theater of Israel Rosenberg . In 1883 he emigrated to London . There he founded his own theater, which was very successful. After the chief rabbi continued to oppose his Yiddish theater, he went to New York in 1889. There he founded his own theater, the Grand Theater . Adler became one of the main actors in Yiddish theater in New York. He died in 1926.

family

Jacob Adler married successively the actresses Sonya Oberlander († 1886), Dinah Shtettin (1862-1946, divorce 1891) and Sara Heine-Levitsky (1858-1953). Stella Adler , his daughter with Sara, was a well-known stage actress and theater educator.
