Jacob Praetorius the Elder
Jacob Praetorius the Elder (* around 1520 in Magdeburg , † 1586 in Hamburg ) was a German organist and composer .
Life
Little is known about Praetorius' life. He probably learned from Martin Agricola in his hometown . From 1555 until his death Praetorius can be traced back to two Hamburg churches as organist and church composer. Jacob Praetorius is the father of Hieronymus Praetorius .
Works
Praetorius published the music collection Opus musicum excellens et novum (1566), which contains over 200 works by German and Dutch composers. Only one of these works - a Te deum laudamus a 4 - was definitely composed by Jacob Praetorius himself; only the first part has survived. Praetorius also published a choral collection (1554).
Furthermore, a Veni in hortum meum a 4 has been preserved, which was written either by himself or by Jacob Praetorius the Elder . J. dates.
