Hieronymus Praetorius

Hieronymus Praetorius (born August 10, 1560 in Hamburg ; † January 27, 1629 there ) was a German organist and composer of the early Baroque . He was not related to the much more famous Michael Praetorius .

Life

Coming from a family of musicians, Praetorius received his first musical training from his father, the composer and organist Jacob Praetorius the Elder . He later continued this in Cologne.

In 1580 he accepted the position of cantor in Erfurt. In 1582 he returned to his hometown, where he succeeded his father as organist at the St. Jacobi Church after the death of his father . As part of his work there, he also performed the function of church scribe. Here he worked until his death in 1629.

Hieronymus had four sons and three daughters, of whom Jacob , Michael and Johann also became musicians. The son of the same name Hieronymus (II) Praetorius (born October 8, 1595 in Hamburg; † December 23, 1651 in Schmalkalden) was professor of ethics, politics and physics at the University of Jena, 1635 court preacher in Weimar, 1637 superintendent in Schleusingen and 1642 superintendent in Schmalkalden.

Praetorius' compositional work includes primarily sacred works. He mainly created works for organ and vocal music. These are mainly chorales , masses , kyries , psalms , magnificats and hymns . He is considered one of the founders of the North German Organ School . Hieronymus Praetorius enjoyed a high reputation in Hamburg during his lifetime, as he made a contribution to the development of Hamburg's musical life.
