Johann Praetorius (composer)
Johann Praetorius (born November 25, 1595 in Hamburg ; † July 25, 1660 there ) was a composer and organist .
Johann was a student of his father Hieronymus Praetorius and - like his brother Jacob - Jan Pieterszoon Sweelincks . From 1611 he was organist and church clerk at the St. Nikolai Church in Hamburg. In 1619 he married Anna Sperling, the daughter of the rector of the Johanneum , with whom he had two children: Hieronymus (* around 1620) and Elisabeth (* around 1622).
Johann Praetorius was attributed 14 chorale and two psalm arrangements for organ by Klaus Beckmann , which have come down to us under the abbreviations JP , JPS and Johann Peters and were previously considered compositions by Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck. These reallocations are considered controversial in musicology.
