Jacob Willemsz. Delff (the younger)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jakob Willemsz. Delff (also Delft ) ( the younger ) (born March 24, 1619 - † May 12, 1661 in Delft ) was a Dutch painter. He was also city councilor and harbor master of the city of Delft.

His parents were the painter Willem Jacobszoon Delff (1580–1638) and his wife Geertruid van Mierevelt (1594–1639). His grandfather was Jakob Willemsz. Delff (the Elder) (around 1550–1601). His other grandfather was Michiel van Mierevelt (1567–1641) in whose workshop he was also trained. After his death he continued the flourishing company. It is therefore often very difficult to distinguish between the images. Stitch with G. or GJ Delff, however, belong to him.

Having become rich through inheritance, there was no need for him to work. Due to his talent he developed into a very good portrait painter. Like his grandfathers, he painted many officers of the Delft rifle guild, in which he also worked as an ensign, captain and sergeant. He also painted windows, some of which are said to have survived.

When the powder tower in Delft exploded in 1654, the rifle house ( Doele ) was also badly damaged. In 1659 he received 200 guilders for the restoration of his grandfathers' pictures.
