Jacob do Bandolim
Jacob do Bandolim (born February 14, 1918 in Rio de Janeiro ; † August 13, 1969 ibid), actually Jacob Pick Bittencourt , was a Brazilian mandolinist and composer . His stage name is derived from the mandolin, which is called bandolim in Portuguese .
Life
Jacob do Bandolim was the only child of the pharmacist Francisco Gomes Bittencourt and Rackel Pick, who was of Polish-Jewish or Russian-Jewish descent. After his first musical attempts with the violin and the harmonica , he discovered the mandolin as a teenager. In the mid-1930s he was already accompanying famous artists such as Noel Rosa on the radio. In addition to his work as a musician, he worked as a salesman, pharmacy assistant, insurance broker, businessman and as a police secretary. Due to his financial independence he was able to compose and make his music more freely. In 1940 he married Adylia Freitas, with whom he had two children: Helena and Sérgio Bittencourt.
Dissatisfied with his role as accompanist, he recorded the Choro Treme Treme on vinyl in 1947 and confirmed what Luperce had already shown Miranda ; that the mandolin is also well suited as a solo instrument. His second major success as a mandolinist was Flamengo , a choro by Bonfiglio de Oliveira. Over the years he composed many successful pieces such as the famous Doce de Coco . In addition, Jacob do Bandolim was a tireless collector of musical treasures that are now in the Museu da Imagem e do Som in Rio de Janeiro.
