Jacques Féréol Mazas (born September 23, 1782 in Lavaur , † August 26, 1849 in Bordeaux ) was a French violinist and music teacher .

Life

From 1802 Mazas was a student of Pierre Baillot at the Conservatory in Paris, where he received a first prize in 1805. He celebrated his first successes with the performance of the Viotti Concerts. In 1808 he played a violin concerto composed for him by Daniel-François-Esprit Auber . Later he worked as a violinist under Rodolphe Kreutzer at the Théâtre-Italien . Around 1811 he went on a concert tour to Spain and in 1814 a longer trip to England, Holland and Belgium. In 1822 he gave concerts in Italy, Germany and Russia. In 1827 he performed with brilliant success in various German cities. When he returned to Paris in 1829, it was found that his solo skills had deteriorated. In 1831 he became first violinist at the Théâtre du Palais-Royal . But in the same year he took over the position of music director in Orléans. From 1837 to 1841 he was director of the music school in Cambrai.

He owes his fame to his educational works, primarily the Méthode de violon and the Études brilliant op.36.
