Dr. Jacques Legrand.

Jacques Amable Legrand (born August 29, 1820 in France; † June 6, 1912 there ) was one of the first French philatelists in the nineteenth century, one of the first organizers in the field of philately and one of the first to research in this field of knowledge. He had the pseudonym Dr. Magnus .

Life

He was active for the journal Le Timbrophile and together with Pierre Mahé he invented the perforation key .

In contrast to Georges Herpin and Arthur Maury, who preferred the term “philately”, he wanted to name the collection area “timbrology”.

On June 14, 1875 he was one of the founders of the Société Française de Timbrologie , one of the most important philatelic institutions in France, and acted as its secretary and Arthur de Rothschild was its president. Early members included Arthur Maury, despite disagreement over the term "philately", and the painter Gustave Caillebotte .

Dr. Legrand was the editor of “Le timbre fiscal”, which Jean-Baptiste Moens had published since January 1874. He also had both a red and a blue Mauritius with Moens numbers VI and VII in his collection.
