Jacques Pohl , actually Jakob Pollak ( February 14, 1850 in Proßnitz - November 8, 1926 in Vienna ) was an Austrian opera singer ( bass ) and opera director .

Life

Jacques Pohl, the son of a leather merchant, was originally supposed to be a rabbi , but first learned a commercial profession. At that time he was already singing in the Proßnitz choir. There he was recommended to take singing lessons. He then went to Vienna and had his voice trained by Professors Laufer, Schmitt and Franz Josef Löwenstamm. He made his debut in Pressburg in 1871 as "Silva" in Ernani . He then sang on various stages in Germany, Austria, Holland and Switzerland as a bass player and bass buffo. In 1880 he performed under the name Jakob Pollak at the Hofburgtheater in Vienna, where he sang Bartolo in the barber of Seville . After performing under his real name Pollak until 1884, he then called himself Jacques Pohl. He later turned to directing operas and appeared in operettas . From 1893 he carried out these activities at the Theater an der Wien . In 1900 he went to the Carltheater . He also gave lessons in the dramatic subjects, particularly opera, operetta and farce .
