Jacques Roger

Jacques Roger (* 1920 ; † March 26, 1990 ) was a French historian of science in biology and paleontology.

Life

Roger studied classical literature (Agrége 1943). From 1951 to 1953 he did research for the CNRS and then taught at the University of Poitiers. In 1964 he became a professor at the University of Tours , where he was Doyen de la Faculté des lettres from 1965 to 1969, and in 1970 professor of the history of science at the Sorbonne . From 1982 he was director of the École des hautes études en sciences sociales , from 1978 director of the Center international de synthèse and from 1983 to 1989 director of the Center Alexandre Koyré.

He dealt particularly with the history of science in biology in the 18th century and especially since the 1950s Georges-Louis Leclerc de Buffon , whose biographer he was. In 1962 he published a critical edition of Buffon's Epoques de la Nature (Paris: Éd. Du Museum 1962, new edition 1988).

He was editor of the journal Revue de synthèse and served on the editorial board of History of Science , Journal of History of Biology and other journals. From 1985 he was co-editor of the Revue d´histoire des sciences next to René Taton and from 1989 next to Jean Dhombres . In 1967 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .
