The Jagex Ltd. (also Jagex Games Studio ) is an online games developer based in Cambridge, England. Her best-known publications are the MMORPG RuneScape and the games portal FunOrb .

Jagex specializes in games that can be played in the browser without downloading additional programs, which is why the Java programming language is preferred . The name Jagex formerly stood for Yes va G aming ex perts, today the company called J ust A bout the G ame ex perience.

history

In 1999 the name first appeared as a name for an engine produced by Andrew Gower , the abbreviation for Java-Audio + Graphics Extension. However, Gower quickly began to trade under the name, describing Jagex as a "small English software company that produces high-quality games for homepages". Today's Jagex came into being in 2001 when Andrew and his brother Paul Gower released the game RuneScape . The company was able to achieve its first commercial success when the paid version of RuneScape appeared in 2002. From there on, the number of players in RuneScape grew. Jagex began to translate her game into German , French and Brazilian . In March 2008 they published the games portal FunOrb , which also has a paid version.

Jagex was working on a RuneScape successor called MechScape . However, development was stopped in August 2009 shortly before the game was finished and started all over again because it did not achieve the desired quality standards. According to CEO Mark Gerhard, the development costs of the game were well in the double-digit million range ("tens of millions of pounds"). Many parts of the project, including the game engine , will be reused in a new project.
