The Millennium Bridge is a bridge over the Havel in Brandenburg an der Havel and connects the old town with the new town . The bridge got its name when the new bridge was inaugurated in 1929 on the occasion of the 1000th anniversary of the city.
history
The first wooden bridge stood at this point around 1230/1240. A wooden bascule bridge was built at this point in 1860 under the name Lange Brücke, which was replaced in 1892 by an iron bridge with a drawbridge in the middle. Because this bridge again became a traffic obstacle, it was demolished again in 1928. As a new building, a three-part reinforced concrete bridge was erected, which was inaugurated on September 7, 1929 and was named Millennium Bridge.
In April 1945 the Millennium Bridge was blown up and rebuilt in 1946/47. In July 1993 the bridge was closed to vehicles for safety reasons and in 1995/96 the bridge was demolished and rebuilt. The new building was inaugurated on December 4, 1996.
