Jaime Bermúdez Merizalde (* 1966 in Bogotá ) is a Colombian diplomat and politician .

biography

After attending school, he studied law at the Universidad de los Andes , from which he graduated with an academic degree . Then he was admitted to the bar.

After his return to Colombia, he first became an adviser to the President and then from 1991 to 1993 a member of the Human Rights Advisory Office . Between 1993 and 1994 he was an advisor to the Foreign Minister, where he was also the coordinator of the Commission on Neighborhoods and the publication of the book "Colombia and Venezuela - A New Bilateral Scheme". In 1994 he was also an observer for the United Nations in the presidential election in South Africa .

In 1996 he started working as Executive Director of the Ibero-American market research consortium CIMA. During this time he also completed a post-graduate studies at St Antony's College of Oxford University , where he earned a doctorate ( Ph.D. ) for its special studies on public opinion gained. After completing his doctorate , he was also a consultant for communication strategies, public affairs and crisis management in the economic, multinational and public sectors.

In 2002 he became communications advisor to Álvaro Uribe Vélez during his presidential campaign. After Uribe was elected President on August 7, 2002, he became his advisor for communications and held this position until the end of Uribe's term in August 2006. In this role, he advised the President on issues relating to the restructuring of Telecom, for example the workers' conflict at Ecopetrol, the coordination of the representation of Colombia abroad, the campaign for the free trade agreement with the USA , the coordination of government communications, the preparation of speeches, crisis management and international affairs. He was also director of the export and investment promotion agency PROEXPORT and director of the “Colombia es Pasión” campaign.

In September 2006 he was named ambassador to Argentina by President Uribe .

On July 16, 2008, President Uribe appointed him to succeed the resigned Fernando Araújo as Foreign Minister. In this capacity, before a summit at the end of August 2009, he called for the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) to work together to combat terrorism and drug trafficking . On the other hand, he is looking to expand good relations with the USA.
