He came from the famous Alder family of musicians from Urnäsch ; his grandfather was the well-known Johannes Alder. Jakob grew up on his parents' farm in Hundwil. In the basement there was a hand loom on which the boy learned to weave, which later became his main job. He was also a farmhand and later a freelance sales representative for a winery. He composed pieces of music that last amounted to around 150 titles. 1934–1947 Alders played Jock in the string music founded by his grandfather in 1884. In addition to the main instrument, the violin, he also played the accordion , cello and piano . In the Harmoniemusik Hundwil he learned to play various brass instruments.
