The portrait of Jakob Fugger the Rich was painted by Albrecht Dürer around 1518 during the 18th Reichstag in Augsburg . The painting is now in the Staatsgalerie Altdeutscher Meister , the former Katharinenkirche in Augsburg .

The merchant Jakob Fugger , who was almost sixty at the time, looked into the distance. The light blue background of the picture softens the severity and sobriety of his gaze. The position of the head indicates firmness and self-confidence. The broad forehead and the thin lips also give the viewer the impression of having a strong personality in front of him, who does not require any further decoration such as medals or other decorations pinned to the chest. The fashionable, simple, gold-colored beret of the cleric gives an indication of the social position of the Painted. Albrecht Dürer painted the clear complexion of the beardless face in 1518 with fine brushstrokes against a delicate blue background. The blue background appeared before in the portrait of a young woman painted in 1506 .

The outer edges of Jakob Fugger's clothes and fur cross and overlap. In the shape of a triangle, an ascending pyramid, they create the effect of solidity and rigor of the form. Doubts as to its authenticity

The frozen and unmoved physiognomy of the face and weaknesses in the depiction of the fur suggest a copy of a lost picture from Dürer's workshop. On the other hand, the execution of the painting as a "handkerchief painting" - a preliminary painting that was presented to the client for assessment - would explain why the depiction of the fur is not yet perfectly executed.
