Jakob Wittgenstein
Jakob Wittgenstein (born April 1, 1819 in Korbach ; † June 3, 1890 in Berlin ) was a German merchant, patron and politician .
Life
Wittgenstein, who was of Jewish faith, was the son of Simson Wittgenstein from the Wittgenstein family and his wife Rebecca née Rosenberg. He married Clara Lippert in Berlin. In 1871 the marriage was divorced before the Berlin City Court. The marriage produced a daughter who died as a child. Wittgenstein attended the Fürstlich-Waldeckische Landesgymnasium from 1826 to 1834 . Then he lived as a merchant in Korbach. In 1851 he also acquired the Korbach citizenship. In 1858 he moved to Berlin, where he successfully ran real estate businesses.
During the March Revolution he stood up for the Democratic Party. From 1849 to 1851 he was a member of the state parliament of the Principality of Waldeck-Pyrmont . He was elected in the 8th constituency. He was a founding member and secretary of the Korbach Citizens' Association.
In 1890 he died by suicide . He used his fortune of 572,000 gold marks to found the interdenominational "Jacob Wittgenstein'schen pension institution".
Jakob-Wittgenstein-Strasse in Korbach is named after him.
