Jakub Natanson

Jakub Natanson (born August 20, 1832 in Warsaw ; † September 14, 1884 , ibid) was a Polish chemist and banker .

Life

He was one of the discoverers of Fuchsin . Natanson also wrote the first textbook on organic chemistry in Polish. He was the son of a banker and from 1852 studied chemistry at the University of Dorpat with a master’s degree in 1856, where he synthesized fuchsin in the master’s thesis published in Liebigs Annalen in 1856. He then trained with leading chemists in Germany, France and Great Britain from 1858 to 1862 and in 1862 became professor of chemistry at the Szkoła Główna Warszawska in Warsaw . He gave up his professorship in 1866 to join the family bank (Bank Handlowy, today after the merger citi-Handlowy.) He was in the management of various companies (with interests in coal mining (near Sosnowiec ), paper, sugar, railways) and founded u. a. the industrial and agricultural museum.

In 1856 he found two new urea syntheses.
