The Jama Masjid (German: 'Friday Mosque') is the main mosque in the city of Agra , located in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh , and a major work of Mughal architecture . It is located in the immediate vicinity of the Red Fort .

history

With interruptions from 1526 to 1648, Agra was the capital of the Mughal Empire ; Above all, the Mughal Mughal Shah Jahan (r. 1627–1658) furnished the city with representative buildings - including expansions in the area of the Red Fort and the construction of the Friday Mosque in the years from 1645 to 1648. He dedicated it to his unmarried favorite daughter Jahanara Begum who probably took over the organization of the finances and part of the construction management.

Mosque courtyard

In contrast to most mosques in India, the mosque courtyard ( sahn ), located on a heaped substructure and measuring around 100 × 60 m, is largely open on the east side; to the left and right are about 10 m wide covered galleries ( riwaqs ), which are crowned by numerous small ornamental pavilions ( chhatris ) with marble domes. In the middle of the courtyard there is a shallow well basin for the ablutions ( wudū ' ) prescribed by the Koran (sura 5,6) before prayer ( salāt ); there are also chhatris in the four corners of the basin.

The actual mosque building, made of bricks but clad with red sandstone and white marble from Rajasthan , is located in the west of the complex; On the roof rise three domes with zigzag ornaments and upturned marble lotus blossoms , which, however, are surrounded by numerous small and two larger chhatris; its tip ends in a ball stick ( jamur ). The Ivan arch of the central portal is almost entirely clad in white marble. Two octagonal side towers with zigzag patterns (the upper part of the right collapsed in the 1960s and has not yet been renewed) form a decorative and representative frame for the almost square Pischtak . The five rooms of the mosque hall are clad with white stucco - arches and inner domes show muqarnas ornaments; inside the arches there are rope rods with drooping end pieces. Above the rather unadorned mihrab niche pointing towards Mecca and in its frame are encrusted inscriptions made of black marble; the back of the prayer seat ( minbar ) for the prayer leader ( imam ) shows a marble relief from the mosque.
