James Smith Aitken (born 1907 in Markinch , † July 20, 1931 in Kirkcaldy ) was a Scottish football player .
Career
Aitken, the eldest son of a Milton of Balgonie family with nine children, played for a number of clubs in Fife in the 1920s in Scottish Juvenile Football , an association with a maximum age limit of 27. In the 1928/29 season he drew attention to himself as a center forward with the Markinch Victoria Rangers , for which he scored over 40 goals this season. As a result, he was brought for the 1929/30 season by William Collier , a former Scottish international, to the English club Kettering Town in the Southern League . At the end of January 1930, by then Aitken should have scored 26 goals for Kettering, he moved to the Football League Third Division North in York City , where coach Jock Collier was William's brother. Aitken made his debut a few days later in a 4-2 win against Crewe Alexandra ( hat-trick by Willie Millar ), but only three more appearances followed during the rest of the season, the center-forward position was mostly occupied by Bill Gardner . Aitken scored his only goal in a 3-1 defeat at Hartlepools United in April 1930, where he met after a corner for the interim lead.
For the 1930/31 season he moved to Dartford FC back in the Southern League; his former coach William Collier had now taken over as coach. In April 1931 he won with Dartford by a 5-2 win in the replay against Folkestone Town the Kent Senior Cup ; Aitken scored two goals in the replay. Aitken was in his homeland during the summer break in July 1931, when he was hit in the stomach area with one knee while doing a hobby kick with friends. A few days later his health deteriorated dramatically and he died a few hours after being admitted to Kirkcaldy Hospital .
