James Barnes (composer)

James Charles Barnes (* 9. September 1949 in Hobart , the US state of Oklahoma , USA ) is an American composer .

Life

After studying composition and music theory at the University of Kansas , he earned a Bachelor of Music in 1974 and a Master of Music in 1975 . He studied conducting privately with Zuohuang Chen . Since 1977 he has taught instrumentation and composition at the University of Kansas .

James Charles Barnes is also a tuba player and has performed with well-known orchestras in the USA.

His compositions are widespread and are frequently performed in the United States, Europe, Japan, Taiwan, and Australia. The Tōkyō Kōsei Wind Orchestra has so far recorded three CDs with works by James Barnes. In 1978 (for Symphony op. 35 ) and 1981 (for Visions macabre ) he was awarded the Sousa / ABA / Ostwald Award of the American Bandmasters Association .

In March 2013, James Barnes accompanied the Bishop Ireton Symphonic Wind Ensemble on a concert tour to Bavaria to conduct the world premiere of his overture “A Bavarian Easter Festival” in Zolling .
