James Cloyd Downs

James Cloyd Downs (born November 6, 1885 - December 11, 1957 in Eugene , Oregon ) was an American chemical engineer who is best known for inventing the Downs cell .

Life

James C. Downs designed the electrolysis cell named after him in Niagara Falls as an employee of the Roessler and Hasslacher Chemical Company, founded in 1885 and taken over by DuPont in 1930 .

James C. Downs was the son of James P Downs and Mary Louise Cloyd. He was married to Mabel Lehmann; the couple had five children.

Honors

James Downs was awarded the Jacob F. Schoellkopf Medal in 1934. It is awarded by a division of the American Chemical Society . But above all, the cell he invented bears his name.
