James E. Smith
James Edward Smith (born November 29, 1950 ) is an American computer engineer.
Smith studied electrical engineering at the University of Illinois with a bachelor's degree in 1972, a master's degree in 1974 and a doctorate in 1976. He was a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison , apart from longer periods in industry ( Cray Research) from 1979 to 1981 and from 1984 to 1989.
He is known for some innovations in the micro-architecture of advanced processors, such as branch prediction and reorder buffers , which enable out-of-order execution .
Most recently he has been working on co-designed virtual machines , computer architectures with the simultaneous development of system-related software and hardware.
In 1999 he received the Eckert-Mauchly Award .
