Gönen is a city in the district of the same name in the Turkish province of Balıkesir and at the same time a district of the Büyükşehir belediyesi Balıkesir (metropolitan municipality / metropolitan province ) created in 2012 . The city is located about 55 kilometers north of the center of Balıkesir . Since a regional reform in 2012, the district town is geographically identical to the district. According to the city logo, it was elevated to a Belediye (municipality) in 1888
The district is located in the north of the province on the Marmara Sea . It borders Bandırma and Manyas to the east, Balya to the south and Çanakkale Province to the west . The northern border forms the coast of the Marmara Sea. The city lies on the river Gönen Çayı , the ancient Aisepos , which flows into the sea in the north of the district. In the east, the district extends to Lake Manyas Gölü .
