James Glentworth Butler

James Glentworth Butler (also J. Glentworth Butler , born August 3, 1821 in Brooklyn , New York , † December 29, 1916 in Boonton , New Jersey ) was an American Presbyterian clergyman .

Life

Family and education

Born in Brooklyn, James Glentworth Butler, son of Silas Butler and Phoebe Waldron Butler, graduated from Yale Theological Seminary in 1850. James Glentworth Butler married Evelyn E. Reeve on January 27, 1853 , a native of Richmond , Virginia . Two daughters and the son Dr. Glentworth Reeve Butler. Butler, who spent his old age at the house of his daughter Mrs. William H. Cammeyer in Boonton, New Jersey, died in late December 1916 at the age of 95. He found his final resting place in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York.

Professional background

James Glentworth Butler was ordained to the Pastoral Ministry of the Presbyterian Church, United States, in 1852 . Butler then took over the pastor's position at the First Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , located on 21st and Walnut Street . In 1868 James Glentworth Butler changed to the functions of Secretary , Treasurer and Editor to the American and Foreign Union, in 1871 he resigned.

James Glentworth Butler was among the leading Presbyterian clergy in the United States during the second half of the 19th century . He received his Doctor of Sacred Theology from Hamilton College in Clinton , New York , in 1864 . Butler emerged in particular as an author of Christian religious works.
