James H. Flatley (1985)

James H. Flatley III (born January 9, 1934 ) is a Rear Admiral a. D. of the United States Navy , pilot, and most recently served as Deputy Director, Naval Warfare (OP-095B) on the Chief of Naval Operations staff from July 1986 to July 1987 . He is a son of Vice Admiral James H. Flatley , who was also a naval aviator in the US Navy.

Military career

Flatley joined the US Navy in December 1954. He was trained as a fighter pilot from August 1956 to July 1957 at Pensacola Air Base and then at the Corpus Christi Naval Air Base . In December 1957 he was transferred to Fighter Squadron 33.

From February 1962 he was trained as a test pilot at the Naval Air Test Center , Patuxent River , and then used as such. During this time he made a name for himself in November 1963 with an extraordinary series of tests. He tried out the possibility of landing and taking off on an aircraft carrier with a large transport aircraft of the type KC-130 Hercules . In total, he landed 50 times on the Forrestal , 21 times with a complete standstill and then starting from a standing start and 29 times with a go-around.

In January 1965 he was transferred to the staff of the Attack Carrier Air Wing Three . From April 1967 to July 1969 he was a safety officer in Fighter Squadron 213. He then attended a course at Air Command and Staff College, Air University, at Maxwell Airforce Base, Alabama. He spent the second half of 1970 on the staff of Commander Fleet Air in Norfolk , Virginia.

From January 1971 to May 1972 he was deputy commander and then until May 1973 commander of Fighter Squadron 31. He then became coordinator for fighter pilot training in the staff of the Commander Sea Air Force Atlantic (COMNAVAIRLANT).

From May 1974 to March 1976 he was a commodore of the Attack Carrier Air Wing Seven , after which he returned to the COMNAVAIRLANT staff until August 1976. From there he was ordered to attend a course at the Surface Warfare Officers School in Newport, Rhode Island , where he was preparing for his first assignment as a ship commander .

In February 1977 he took command of the fleet tanker Caloosahatchee . This was followed from July 1978 to May 1979 as an Executive Assistant to the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations.

In May 1979 Flatley became the commander of the Saratoga aircraft carrier , a role he held until November 1981. He was then promoted to Rear Admiral Commander of Naval Training Center Great Lakes , Illinois .

From March 1983 to May 1985 Flatley was the commander of the Aircraft Carrier Combat Group 8. He returned to the Pentagon, where he initially worked as Director, Strike and Amphibious Warfare Division (OP-954) and from July 1986 as Deputy Director, Naval Warfare (OP- 095B) was used. He retired at the end of July 1987.
