James Hillier

James Hillier (born August 22, 1915 in Brantford , Ontario, † January 15, 2007 in Princeton (New Jersey) ) was a Canadian scientist and inventor, who in 1938 (after Ernst Ruska ) together with Albert F. Prebus (born April 19 1913 in Edmonton, Alberta; later professor of optical physics at Ohio State University; † December 16, 1997 in Columbus, Ohio) built the first practicable electron microscope in North America under the direction of Eli Franklin Burton .

He studied at the University of Toronto until 1941 and was then hired by Vladimir Zworykin at RCA in Camden (New Jersey) , where he worked until 1977. In 1993 he founded the James Hillier Foundation . In 1944 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society . In 1960 he received the Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research , and in 1997 the Order of Canada .

His son Bill Hillier produced the television show Jumble in the 1980s .
